Micheal Mahoney

Micheal Mahoney started at KMBC in February of 1980. Before coming to Kansas City, he worked at the WOI-TV, the ABC affiliate in Des Moines-Ames, Iowa from 1978-1980. He was there 2 years, and during part of that time, he was the Des Moines bureau chief which means he was in charge of the coverage of the Iowa State government.

Before that, Micheal worked at WWAY-TV Wilmington, N.C. He was the 11 p.m. anchor there from 1976-78.

Prior to that in 1976, he worked at KOMU-TV in Columbia, Mo., as the 10 p.m. anchor. Micheal also has radio experience at KTGR-AM in Columbia, Mo., as news director. Micheal's career got started in the television business at the age of 14 working for a local cable television operator in Ft. Madison, Iowa, where he grew up.

Micheal is a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, 1972-76

Awards in television include a 1993 Emmy for spot news Coverage of the 1993 Flood. In 1981, Micheal received the Mall Dodson National Headliners Award for continued coverage of the Hyatt Regency Skywalks disaster. On July 17, 1981, he was the only reporter present at the moment the Hyatt Skywalks fell down, killing over 100 people in Kansas City. He appeared on "Nightline" with Ted Koppel that evening and stayed with the story for months afterwards, earning the Headliner Award.

He has also won a number of Kansas City Press Club and Missouri Broadcast Awards through the years for reporting on a variety of stories.

In addition to the Hyatt Disaster in 1981, he has covered Organized Crime from 1982-84 and every major political campaign in Kansas and Missouri since 1982, which included the National Political Conventions and National Campaigns of 1984, 1988, 1992 & 1996.

In 1996 a one-on-one interview with GOP presidential candidate Bob Dole made the front page of the New York Times, as Dole lashed out at fellow Conservatives over the abortion issue. Micheal's other activities outside of the newsroom includes being on the board of the Kansas City St Patrick's Day Committee, which is responsible for the annual parade in Kansas City. Micheal also has co-hosted the United Cerebral Palsy telethon for over 10 years, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Micheal (yes, it is spelled correctly!) was born Sept. 11, 1953 in Dublin, Ireland, so he is a naturalized American Citizen, which explains his interest in the St Patrick's Day Parade!

He is also the proud father of a daughter, Keri, who just graduated Benedictine College, and is married to a lovely woman named Linda.
