Kent State Seeks Upset Of No. 22 Kansas

POSTED: 9:36 am CST December 1, 2008

(Sports Network) - The 22nd-ranked Kansas Jayhawks welcome the Kent State Golden Flashes to Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence for tonight's non- conference clash.

Kent State recently took part in the South Padre Island Invitational and dropped back-to-back decision to opponents from major conferences. After falling to Illinois of the Big Ten in overtime on Friday, the Golden Flashes suffered a 77-71 loss to Texas A&M of the Big 12 on Saturday. Prior to the consecutive setbacks, Kent State had opened the season with three straight wins.

Kansas is the defending national champion, and the squad has five new starters this year. Four of the team's first five games played have resulted in victory, including an 85-53 romp over Coppin State on Friday. The lone loss came against Syracuse in overtime.

This game marks the first-ever meeting between Kansas and Kent State on the hardwood.

The player to watch for Kent State is Al Fisher, who has led his team in scoring in four of the five games thus far. Fisher is averaging 21.8 ppg on 52.5 percent shooting from the floor, and he adds 3.4 apg as well. The only other double-digit scorer in the lineup is Chris Singletary with 15.2 ppg. The Golden Flashes are scoring 75.2 ppg while allowing 65.2 ppg to the opposition. It is a bit surprising that the team is outscoring foes by 10 points per contest considering that it is being outrebounded by nearly seven boards per outing. Fisher scored 24 points and dished out six assists in the loss to Texas A&M on Saturday. Singletary pitched in 15 points for Kent State, which connected on 50.9 percent of its field goal attempts in the tilt. Unfortunately for the Flashes, they were outrebounded by a 35-19 final and permitted the Aggies to shoot 57.1 percent from the field.

Sherron Collins, who led Kansas in scoring in each of the first four outings, is tops on the roster with 18.2 ppg. He is dishing out 4.0 apg and is key to the team's early success. Cole Aldrich, who was a role player off the bench last season, has emerged as the team's best frontcourt performer. Aldrich is scoring 15.8 ppg on 60 percent shooting from the floor, and he is pulling down 9.4 rpg as well. The Jayhawks are scoring 79.0 ppg while allowing 59.4 ppg to their opponents on just 33.8 percent field goal efficiency. In the 32-point win over Coppin State last time out, Aldrich racked up 23 points and 11 rebounds. As for Brady Morningstar, a sophomore guard, he tallied 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from three-point range. Tyshawn Taylor netted 10 points, while Collins added 11 points and eight assists. Kansas earned a 46-21 rebounding advantage and connected on 52.7 percent of its shots from the floor.
