Fire investigators say a cigarette that was improperly disposed caused a fire at the Windrose Apartments early Wednesday morning.

KMBC's Brenda Washington reported that firefighters were called to the complex in the 800 block of Northeast Windrose Drive around 4 a.m. Crews brought the fire under control. Everyone got safely.

A third-floor apartment was gutted and two other apartments were damaged.

Six residents will have to find another place to stay. The Red Cross is helping them.
