OVERLAND PARK, Kan. -- An Overland Park man was arrested Friday for allegedly blowing up pipe bombs in his back yard, KMBC's Tom Corvin reported.
Michael Ray Testerman (pictured, left), 29, allegedly set off the bombs on two separate nights at his home on Godard Street. Neighbors reported hearing the explosions."I was outside and we ran over and saw smoke coming from his back yard," said resident Chance Hurst.
Neighbors said they were worried about Testerman's 5-year-old daughter, as well as other kids in the neighborhood.Police were called after the initial explosion, but Testerman denied any knowledge of what had happened, and officers left. But hours later, Testerman's wife called them back, pointing out materials in the home's garage.According to Paul Morrison, the county prosecutor, officers found PVC pipe and metal end caps typically used in making homemade pipe bombs. They also found gunpowder, a few handguns, a small amount of marijuana and paraphernalia, Corvin reported."You know, we're not talking about Tim McVeigh here. What we are talking about is somebody who likes to make pipe bombs and set them off," Morrison said. "He was doing what we see a lot of teen boys doing -- making pipe bombs because he likes to watch them explode. It's still very serious in our opinion."Authorities arrested Testerman at a relative's house. He was charged with felony criminal use of explosives and misdemeanor drug possession. His bond was set at $50,000.
