Power Outage Darkens Midtown Businesses

POSTED: 5:38 pm CDT April 12, 2004
UPDATED: 6:13 pm CDT April 12, 2004

A power outage affecting hundreds of customers was reported in Midtown Monday afternoon.

The outage happened around 5 p.m. and affected about 246 customers in an area from 40th to 43rd streets, from Jefferson to Broadway. Most of those affected are businesses, officials said. Power was restored to the area around 5:45 p.m.

Police said an underground transformer exploded beneath Mill Creek Park. No one was hurt.

Several businesses in the south part of Westport and the north part of the Plaza reported they lost power. Some stoplights also lost power, causing traffic headaches for drivers.

St. Luke's Hospital reported it did not lose power at its main facility, but some buildings north of the main hospital may have lost power. A spokesperson said because the outage happened after 5 p.m., it is likely that no patients were being treated at the time.
