KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Two people getting gasoline and snacks at a Westport area gas station were caught in the crossfire of a gun battle early Friday morning.

Officers were called to 40th and Broadway streets just after 3 a.m.

KMBC's Jana Corrie reported that a woman in her car was wounded. She was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. A man was wounded when he was hit by a bullet fragment. Both victims are expected to recover.

"They just got to shooting. I ducked on the ground. A bullet fragment hit my car and busted it, and part of it hit me in the face and cut my eye," victim Chris Herring said.

Investigators said they are looking for several shooters. Detectives found several shell casings in different areas around the convenience store.

Police are hoping surveillance video from the gas station will yield more clues.

5 Shot In Last 3 Weeks

In the last three weeks, five people have been shot, including Friday morning's incident.

Officials with the Westport Regional Business League said it has two public safety officers working during the day and between six to eight safety officers at night. But most of the problems have happened after 1 a.m., according to the association.

Merchants believe that teens are looking for something to do and are driving around the area.

Westport officials said they are concerned about the recent violence and they are reviewing options on how best to deal with it.
