Walsh Plunkett Battling Cancer

In the October issue of Redbook Magazine, you will find a glimpse into an Overland Park woman's life.

Laura Walsh Plunkett said the focus of her life is her family. Her daughter, Morgan, is 7 and her son, Jack, is 4. For most of their young lives, Walsh Plunkett has been battling breast cancer. The cancer spread to other parts of her body, too.

"In a matter of about one year, I did 20 different weeks of chemo treatment. I just kept moving forward. 2005 was the chemo year," Walsh Plunkett said.

Walsh Plunkett said battling cancer has been a challenge, especially with young children.

"I'm thankful they're here and I had my children before I got the disease. They help me a lot. I think I am always thinking about the future because of them," Walsh Plunkett said.

Walsh Plunkett said she tries to help her children understand what's happening, such as why Mommy sometimes has to stay in the hospital. She said she worries about how they deal with it.

"When it affects my kids, that's the hardest part because it affects my daily life, and I want them to see me as a strong Mom, someone whose looking this in the face and dealing with it," Walsh Plunkett said.

Walsh Plunkett wrote a heart-warming essay about her daughter's understanding of cancer. An excerpt from a newly released book that includes Walsh Plunkett's story is in Redbook.

Walsh Plunkett said she wants other young women to know her story so they don't feel alone.

"I'm living in the journey. I'm not living for tomorrow. I'm not living for the day I won't have treatment because I'll always have treatment. I've accepted that and I'm OK with that," Walsh Plunkett said.
