The Kansas City Health Department is warning consumers to avoid "Lucky Country Aussie Style Soft Gourmet Natural Flavor Black Licorice" because of elevated levels of lead discovered by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

The licorice is manufactured in North Carolina and distributed at Costco stores, according to a press release from the Health Department.

Costco officials said they are pulling the product off shelves.

The licorice is also sold at Bed Bath and Beyond, Wal-Mart, Walgreens and Whole Foods.

The recall is limited to black licorice candy in a plastic 1.5-pound bag. The front of the bag contains the words "Lucky Country Aussie Style Soft Gourmet Black Licorice." The package also says "All Natural" on the front and has a picture of a yellow kangaroo.

Lucky Country has recalled this product in more than a dozen states. The recall is expected to expand, according to a Lucky Country spokesperson.

Consumers with questions can contact the company at 828-428-8313.
